The Word This Week

Show #5-06 – November 20, 2005

Notorious B.I.G
We bring you to the week of our greatest hits. Nine nifty stories that have been covered by The Word This Week over the last couple of years. And we start you off with Christopher Wallace, A.K.A the Notorious B.I.G. Often cited as one of the best MCs in the history of hip-hop, his career followed rap's cross over from the fringes to the mainstream. Music journalist Cheo Hodari Coker is the author of Unbelievable, a biography of the artist and he explores how Wallace turned himself into a gangster in order to make it big.

Skin
Imagine the body becoming the medium for your novel. That's exactly what New York author Shelley Jackson decided to do for her novel "SKIN". She sent out a call to strangers all over the world who would be willing to get a tattoo of one word of her story and only the participants would be privy to read it.

Ken Nordine
Ken Nordine has fans within beat poetry, modern rock, and Madison Avenue advertisers. And it's no wonder. He has an original mind and one of the most seductive voices you have ever heard that has appeared everywhere from Levi's jeans to Taster's Choice coffee, as well as being the longtime voice of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Bell Hooks
As a US author and university professor, Hooks once described herself as "a Black woman intellectual, revolutionary activist." And that's no exaggeration. She's written on everything from film, visual art and fashion to feminism, race and class. Hooks weighs in with a look at the role of Black men in western society in her book We Real Cool.

Michael Ignatieff
Harvard's human rights policy director Michael Ignatieff defends American military occupation in the search for global democracy. He's the author of such books as The Lesser Evil, Incoherent Empire and The Needs of Strangers.

Not Proud.com
Ah confessions, there's nothing like getting something off your chest. At notproud.com you can tell all, and read all, anonymously. Created by Montreal duo Scott Huot and G.W. Brazier you can literally pick your 'sin' and confess under one (or more if you're feeling really cathartic) of the 7 Deadly Sins.

Ian Rankin
So we venture to Scotland to have a beer with Ian Rankin, the creator behind the surly Inspector Rebus. The success of the series has not only made Ian famous, but has spawned literary explorations of his hometown Edinburgh and made it the series a part of the city itself.

Operation Homecoming
Both for the purposes of chronicling history, and for personal therapy, the US National Endowment for the Arts has sponsored the program Operation Homecoming, which encourages soldiers returning from the Gulf War to write about their wartime experiences.

Poetry Train
We take a look at young aspiring poets, traveling across Canada on a train sharing their works of poetry with each other while hosting writing workshops en board and occasional readings en route.
