The Word This Week

Show #5-10 – January 15, 2006

Anne Rice
We met up with Anne Rice, well-known author of the The Vampire Chronicles to talk to her about her re-conversion to Christianity and her dramatic 180-degree turn in her literary direction.  Her new book is Christ The Lord – Out of Egypt that tells the tale of a seven-year-old Jesus Christ in the first person.

Dr. Joe MacInnis
From the spirituality of the heavens to that of mother earth, Dr. Joseph MacInnis is in all senses of the word an Explorer. He’s the first to dive the North Pole, and recently co-lead James Cameron’s deep-sea expedition to the Titanic. His latest book, Breathing Under Water, is the history of deep-sea exploration and he is an example of how curiosity, leads to understanding.

Frank McCourt
Frank McCourt became an unlikely star when at the age of 66 he burst on the literary scene with the novel Angela’s Ashes, a memoir of his childhood in Ireland. That was followed up with Tis, an account of his early years in New York. He completes the life cycle with Teacher Man – the story of being a teacher in New York High Schools.

Laura Penny
It seems we're living in an era comprised of hypocritical politicians, corrupt corporate executives, and irritating telemarketers who always manage to call, just as we sit down for supper. King's College professor Laura Penny wants us to know the truth - the truth, that is, about what she deems to be bullshit, in her new book Your Call Is Important To Us.

When Brothers Speak
Most people cringe when you mention spoken word. But over the past 7 years, Toronto poet Dwayne Morgan has managed to change hundreds of people’s minds about that. When Brothers Speak, his latest spoken word concert, attracted over 400 fans and that makes it the largest event of it’s kind in North America.

Graphic Novel
Eddie Campbell, both a comic artist and cartoonist, stated that the goal of the graphic novel was "to take the form of the comic book, which has become an embarrassment, and raise it to a more ambitious and meaningful level". At the recent International Festival of Authors in Toronto there was a focus on this hybrid genre.

Irving Layton
One of Canada’s greatest poets Irving Layton, passed away in Montreal recently. He was 93. We leave you with a tribute to a man who influenced a whole generation of Canadians with his poetic vision.
