The Word This Week

Show #6-02 – November 5, 2006

Tommy Chong
In 2003 the US Drug Enforcement Administration raided the home of comedian Tommy Chong (one half of the famous Cheech and Chong pothead duo) in a sting operation called Pipe Dreams. Chong was sentenced to nine months in prison for what he says was the Bush Administration’s determination to make an example out of the “Pope of Pot”. Now Tommy Chong, inspired by his time in jail, gets to tell his side of the story in his new memoir The I Chong: Meditations from the Joint.

Bob Dylan
It's nearly 50 years since Bob Dylan emerged onto the scene. Since then his lyrics and music have not only influenced his fans, but also fellow musicians. Author Michael Gray has now compiled all the information he could find about the artist and his inspirations, but also the people he inevitably influenced, in his new book The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia. Michael Gray stopped by BookTelevision to talk about the ever-changing folksinger/ artist.

The Fighter
You don't often hear of people being turned away at the door but that's exactly what happened at the launch for Craig Davidson’s new book The Fighter. The draw for the launch was two boxing matches. The first saw the publicists facing off against each other, followed by the author putting on the gloves to face poet Michael Knox in the ring. Our Videographer Lars-Peter Bjornson was on hand to capture the evening’s rare mix of literacy and adrenaline.

Horse
Before man depended on the motor vehicle he relied on the horse for transport, work, fighting, even food. For thousands of year’s man’s relationship with the animal shaped civilization. J. Edward Chamberlain documents that history in a fascinating new book Horse.

Colin Channer
Colin Channer, author of the best-selling novels Waiting In Vain, and Satisfy My Soul, has assembled some of the finest Caribbean writers in the new short story collection Iron Balloons. Channer who is co-creator of Jamaica’s Calabash Literary festival, came through Toronto to share some of his West Indian literary flavour and compare the editing of Iron Balloons to that of making music.

Bruce Poon Tip
Bruce Poon Tip is the CEO and founder of G.A.P. Adventures, a company that specializes in exotic, but eco-sustainable tourism. He has garnered entrepreneur and leadership awards and his company is considered one of the top employers in Canada. He does not have a book published (not yet anyway), but his skill as a motivational speaker is part of the reason for his success. As you are about to see, he empowers others with his ideas and vision, and in the process creates a highly successful experience for both workers and travelers.
