WRITE ABOUT THE MUSIC – the role of the critic

The avant-garde musician Frank Zappa once said, "Rock journalism is people who can’t write, interviewing people who can’t talk, for people who can’t read”.  But, love them or hate them, critics play a significant role in the big business of rock, pop and hip hop as they Write About The Music.

The golden age of music journalism was in the late Sixties and early Seventies when such writers as Greil Marcus, Nik Cohn and Lester Bangs gave importance to music journalism.  We have to wonder if there is a place for new critical voices amid the multitude of new technologies.

But there is hope for music journalism in the 21st century.  Even if the role of the music critic has changed slightly, with an abundance of new media, there are fresh relationships being created between the music and the listener.
