The Word This Week

Show #5-22 – June 11, 2006

Borneo
Since its debut in 1996 Canada's homegrown Outpost magazine has become one of the country's premiere adventure travel magazines. The magazine recently sent two journalists to the Malaysian Borneo jungle to follow in the footsteps of World War Two Australian and British POW's, becoming the first media entity to recreate the actual route of the Sandakan Death March. Our videographer Lars-Peter Bjornson went along to discover where adventure travel and literature meet - and ended up documenting a larger, more involved story than anyone imagined.

The Weather Makers - Tim Flannery
David Suzuki called Tim Flannery's ‘The Weather Makers' one of the most important books of this young century”. It's got all the usual scary information about the effects of global climate change, but what makes this book different is its attempt to understand our emotional disconnect from ecology and what we can do to avoid a future environmental catastrophe.

Marketing
Some people consider advertising and marketing a form of pollution, but they are necessary elements of the sales business. And they have become an art form in themselves. We take a look at three books on the subject: How To Sell A Lobster by Bill Bishop – money making tips from a street wise entrepreneur. Experience the Message by Max Lenderman – how alternative marketing is changing the brand world. And, Lovemarks – the future of brands by Kevin Roberts CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi.

Lyn Heward
Lyn Heward is the former president of Cirque Du Soleil's creative division. She's now turned her energies to a variety of projects including writing. In The Spark, Heward weaves a story of inspiration against the backdrop of the world famous circus.

The Book of Cool
If you're running out of ideas on what to get the person who has everything may we suggest The Book of Cool. Created by a father and son team in London who were looking to show how they could do that cool trick from skateboarding to dealing cards to spinning a basketball on your finger. It comes with a giant book and a set of instructional DVD's to show you how you can be cool too.

Martyn Burke
Novelist, screenwriter, director and an extensive traveler. These are just several of Martyn Burke's talents. We got a chance to catch up with the Canadian native at the launch of his latest novel, the psychological thriller The Truth About the Night.
