The Word This Week

Show #6-20 – June 3, 2007

Lenny Breau
Lenny Breau’s astonishing jazz guitar virtuosity influenced countless performers, but unfortunately it came at the expense of his personal relationships and happiness. We talk with author Ron Forbes-Roberts about his book One Long Tune that traces Lenny’s life. Interview subjects also include Randy Bachman, Andy Summers and jazz critic Ross Porter.

Your Brain on Music
Elvis Costello is famously quoted as saying “"Writing about music is like dancing about architecture - it's a really stupid thing to want to do."  Well this week we're going to try our own hand at the impossible and are bring you a Word This Week special on the allusive, compelling and mysterious world of music. Our interests were peaked when we were introduced to Daniel J. Levitin’s book This Is Your Brain on Music. It’s a compelling look into the science of sound and an attempt to unearth the meanings behind musical creativity. We have interviews with David Bowie, Missy Elliott, Damhnait Doyle, a variety of song writers and music loving neurologists, all weighing in on this delightfully diverse topic.

RES Magazine
In a sea of festivals and publications there has emerged a unique partnership in the form of RES Magazine and RESFest. The magazine, coming out of New York, and the international touring film festival, has together been exploring everything new and exciting in the digital arts and beyond. We’ve learnt that the current 10th. issue is to be the last in its present form. So what’s in store? We catch up with the festival in Toronto, and take a trip to the Big Apple to find out.

Truth in Journalism
When it comes to the media there is no denying that the methods of reaching and receiving news has drastically changed. This brings up the question of trust. With endless television, radio, print and internet news outlets, often reporting varying versions of the same story, it begs the question, where do we find the truth?

Gun Culture
Most people think that the world of gangs and gun crime is an issue that exists largely south of the border. But the startling reality is that Canada has its own ghettos, its own poverty, and a very real and growing relationship with gang culture and violence. It's not surprising then, that we have two new books Young Thugs, and Enter the Babylon System, both taking an in-depth look into a growing subculture that most would choose to believe does not exist

Nelson Mandela
It’s perhaps one of the most widely recognized faces on the planet and for many he's become the embodiment of peace, freedom and justice. Mandela, The Authorized Portrait, was recently released and videographer Lars-Peter Bjornson sat down with editorial consultant and longtime friend of Mandela, Mr. Mac Maharaj.

Dr. Sketchy
What happens when Cabaret meets art school? For New Yorker Molly Crabapple, life-drawing classes with typical models perched in standard poses was boring and uninspiring. So she launched Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School -- a fabulously fun night of filling your artist sketchbook with a mean Victorian scene!

Tara Ariano – Television Without Pity
“Spare the snark, Spoil the Networks” is the official motto of the very popular website Television Without Pity. Founded by Tara Ariano and Sarah Bunting, the site features shameless, opinion- ated, and hilarious recaps of popular TV shows by a variety of writers, and forums where fans can go on to continue to discuss and dissect TV shows in all their glory. Now following in the steps of the website is their new book Television Without Pity: 752 Things We Love to Hate (and Hate to Love) About TV.

Genesis Books
Just outside London is Genesis Publications - it's one of those, now rare, small independent book publishers who specialize in one off hand bound books. They produce books about explorers, rock and roll legends and pretty much anything the owner or the staff finds interesting.

Page 3 Girls
The UK tabloid press has that strange phenomenon of printing the news about politics, sports, crime and such things, alongside saucy pictures of beautiful women. Think of it what you will, but the Page Three Girls have made The Sun the biggest selling English-language newspaper in the world. Videographer LPB went to England to follow the trail from photo shoot to printed page.
